about

Sug Knight was a noise core band which existed from 2006 through early 2007, based out of Mobile Alabama. It was conceived of and operated contrary to everything that my previous experiences of playing in bands had prepared me for. We had no songs, we had no merch, we had no outwardly expressed individuality, instead wearing masks and operating in a context of anonymity. We experienced extremes of postshow reactions-- people who had seen my other bands dozens of times were begging to know our identities, or else no one would interact with us at shows as we toured because they were unaware that we were the people who had just played. It was an exercise in defeat and even the failed ideas i ultimately view as part of the art. The first show we had lights taped all over ourselves to blind the audience and i left blood stains in my mask at a backwoods country pool party. The second show was played at my own going away party in my parents garage before i moved to hawaii, where we were still trying to mask our identities. When someone turned the lights on because they lost their glasses, Robert threw his guitar down and I ran away into the woods. I feel now this was an essential part of the show.

Our only tour took about 2 to 3 practices of preparation. There was a loose structure to the piece, mainly based around the 6 successive drum beats, the rest was completely free. We had no combined influences to speak of and almost exclusively listened to rap, though we did all share a love of early Fugazi and even half attempted a cover of "Burning".

Our full intended set was about 2 to 2 and a half minutes long. This is why I am able to concisely release every show we ever played. What is essential to the band is that often times we would not make it through these sets-- as in Carrboro when we played with formulaic hardcore bands and we gave up after a minute or two of laughter from the philistines as our instruments fell apart, or more triumphantly in Greenville when it took Robert a full 50 seconds to smash the neck off of his guitar (which he still played the next day after duct-taping it together). I have had it recounted to me from various sources that we were the absolutely worst or best band they had ever seen. Either of these are always lofty praises.

The live experience was essential as Sug Knight was almost solely a live band. That is why i am including the entirety of my tour journal in the download, so that you can realize the stresses and sleep and food deprivation and warrant for arrest and lack of confidence and relationship and financial agonies that went into creating what I feel was ultimately successful art. Each day was pent into 2 minutes, but like all expressions of emotion that are ultimately motivated from outside oneself, sometimes you fail, sometimes you give up in the middle, and sometimes you are successful left broken lying contentedly in the wreckage.

The Album consists of multiple takes of the piece we performed on tour, several other ideas created at practices, a multilayered new piece recently constructed from original tape source material, and the 7 shows which Sug Knight played during its existence.
